A candlestick looks like one shape, but it's really storing four prices from whatever time period it covers: the open (where price started), the high (the highest it reached), the low (the lowest it reached), and the close (where it ended up). Traders talk about these constantly: "the candle's high got rejected," "price closed above the open." Knowing exactly which part of the candle each word points to is the first skill, before any pattern.
